Maltz plans kids’ auditions for next season

FLORIDA WEEKLY STAFF

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is preparing for its 2017/18 season with the eighth annual First Step to Stardom, a free open-call audition event on April 22, where it will be casting kids’ parts for all of its professional productions, including Disney’s “Newsies” and “Hairspray.”

There are roles for dozens of students ages 7 to 24 available.

Andrew Kato, the theater’s producing artistic director and chief executive, said this is the first year local youth are invited to take part in all five of the season’s shows.

Things get started at 9 a.m. on April 22 at the theater, 1001 E. Indiantown Road, Jupiter, where kids will learn a dance routine, receive acting tips and learn to sing as an ensemble. Students should wear dance clothing and dance or closed-toe shoes (no sandals, flipflops or open-toe shoes).

To help students prepare, two optional audition prep classes are offered from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, and Sunday, April 2, in the theater’s Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts. The cost for the optional class is $27. Students should wear dance clothing and dance shoes or closed-toe shoes (no sandals, flipflops, or open-toe shoes).

A free 30-minute audition prep workshop for both parents and kids also will be offered April 15 which will provide an overview of what to expect at the audition day. Parents will attend a Q&A session while students learn music and a dance combination. To register for the workshop, first register online for an audition time slot, then contact the conservatory to register for the workshop.

Shows planned for the 2017/18 season include: “Born Yesterday” (Oct. 29-Nov. 12); Disney’s “Newsies The Musical” (Nov. 28-Dec. 17); “Hairspray” (Jan. 9-28); “An Inspector Calls” (Feb. 4-18); and “South Pacific” (March 6-25).
